printing issues--Epson Stylus Photo 820

A while back I had printing issues with a lexmark printer.
It had been working until I did some updates, and then just stopped responding whatever. I tried everything I could think of and every suggestion I could get.
I became fed up and decided to replace the lexmark (since this and other lexmarks had given me trouble) with an Epson (since I had heard so many good things about Epson printers with Linux).
So, I purchased an Epson Styuls Photo 820. Linuxprinting.org says that this printer works perfectly.
So I brought it home, installed the hardware, rebooted, the printer was detected, an appropriate driver (specific to this model, even) was offered and selected and for all practical purposes the printer appears to be happily installed on my
machine. Yet, it does not respond when jobs are sent to it.
I tried watching the printer manager after sending a job; What I see is this:
The job alternates between a state of being "queued" and being "processed", and
every time it alternates, the page number rises by one. So, even when I sent a 2
line text document, it sits there and says "queued...processing...queued,
processing...queued...processing...(ad infinitum) as the page numbers rise steadily
onward...I stopped it when a two line text document had purportedly become 23 pages
long as the damned thing tried unsuccessfully to decide whether to queue or
process.
I don't think this has anything to do with the hardware, either. Perhaps this is
what was happening to the lexmark, for all I know.
The driver is a foomatic+gimp-print, and I am using cups (1.1.7-13.3).
At one point, the printer configuration tool said that it could not open the USB
device, supposedl;y because it did not exist, yet the printer was detected properly
on that USB port. Other USB devices are functioning fine (like this keyboard).
This printer can also use parallel, but that proved no more productive, in fact,
the printer was identified as a "stylus 820" (without "photo") when I attempted
to install it on the parallel port, and did not respond then, either.
Does anyone have an idea what the probelm is? Do you require further information?
Any assistance would be deeply appeciated. School starts next week and printing is essential to my teacher duties.

Thanks,
tony b
