Well I increased RAM from 256 (128+128) to 512 (128+128+256)MB SWAP earlier was 512 ( 2wice as RAM size) now 512 MB (same as RAM)
IS it really necessary to add swap ?
Can anybody throw some light ? This machine will be used mostly by programmers (run pgm for 3/4 days) software like fluent/matlab
and processor is p4 1.6 GHz

I was going to say that you wouldn't, but with matlab/fluent, you actually might need it. I highly recommend getting more RAM. It will save your programmers many hours. With 512MB RAM, 512MB swap will work, although you may have a swap storm if your swap starts getting full.
