Thanks to those who recommend Orinoco cards, but that's specifically the card that's problematic, because new Orinoco have a different internal chipset (Hermes II) which doesn't work under Linux without hacking if they work at all. They still call them Orinoco Silver and Gold cards, they just don't work.
