IBM delivers at least three different hardware for their Thinkpads. Yours could be the Philips / Atheros Hardware. There is a driver at http://sourceforge.net/projects/madwifi which uses a binary library by atheros. There is also a GPL only driver, see http://team.vantronix.net/ar5k/ Both drivers are still beta. I couldn't manage to test them yet and now my laptop is stolen :-). Would be nice if you could give a report about your efforts with it.
