Heh, sorry to confuse.

The SMP kernel is fine if you have less than 4 gigs of ram, and more 
than one processor.  The UP kernel is for when you have less than 4 
gigs of ram, and only one processor.  The bigmem kernel is for when you 
have 4 gigs or more of ram, period.  Both UP and SMP machines with 4 
gigs or more should use the bigmem kernel.
