Replying to my own message...

chown a+s /usr/sbin/amcheck still gives me the message about it not
being setuid

also - figured out that the tapedevice is commented out so I got that
working and now /usr/sbin/amlabel works properly.

so my problem is that it still doesn't back up...

output of mail from the command amdump DailySet1

These dumps were to tape DailySet11.
The next tape Amanda expects to use is: a new tape.
