I recently did a new install of RH 9.0 on my nameserver. I copied all my files from the
old setup on RH 8.0 to the new installation.

I am having trouble getting the named service to run. If I just run

service named start

I get the messages:

Aug 5 09:18:07 xxx named[5575]: using 1 CPU [ OK ]
Aug 5 09:18:07 xxx named[5575]: loading configuration from '/etc/named.conf'
Aug 5 09:18:07 xxx named: named startup succeeded

Aug 5 09:18:07 xxx named[5575]: exiting (due to early fatal error)

If I start named with

named -d 10
/etc/rc.d/init.d/named stop
grep ":" db*
grep "," db*
/etc/rc.d/init.d/named start
sleep 30
tail /var/log/messages

I get
