To restart X from the GUI do Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, but I don't think that hold a lot of promise in your case. You may want to go to init level 3 at startup and end up at a command console, and then attempt to start X. i.e. Fix /etc/inittab and replace the 5 with a 3 in the line that looks like this - id:5:initdefault: making it look like this - id:3:initdefault: Then bounce the box, login as root, and execute startx noting your log positions before you execute that command so you know what that process did via the logs afterwards. i.e. execute the command at a specific time and most things in the logs after that is likely due to that execution. Most things, but not all.
