Bob, Thanks for responding.

You are right, they did not rebuild correctly.  I didn't check with depmod as
you suggest and failed to note the messages when rebooting.

I was unable to make these alsa RPM's work on the 4600c hardware even
though your suggestion does allow them to build without errors.

Specifically the drivers I have tried are:

freshrpm's.net

alsa-driver-0.9.4-fr2.src.rpm
alsa-lib-0.9.4-fr1.src.rpm
alsa-utils-0.9.4-fr1.src.rpm

Intel web site

alsa_driver_0.9.1adi_rev5.tar.gz
alsa_driver_0.9.3a.tar

Anyone else have suggestions?
