Your original post mentioned "handle ... in a multitude of ways",
which I understood to mean "edit as well as view"...

Yeah. To wit: Eog (Eye of Gnome), and Kuickshow (a KDE app.) ... also
included with the distro. You can also download gThumb from 
http://www.gnome.org, if you want an application which will allow
you to view images in a manner similar to using a photographer's
light-table.
