Nasty.  Some random thoughts---
If you're not breaking any upgrade rules, I guess a hardware problem 
is possible.  Maybe a physical inspection, check seating of modules, 
connectors,fans, etc is in order.

Do the BIOS settings look OK?  Will it tell you the power supply
voltages, temperatures, etc?

I wonder if it was working right with RH8.0, or did you upgrade 
too soon to be sure?

Did you do a media check on the install CDROM, or better yet, 
has that CD done good installations elsewhere?

Do you have other identical systems, so you could swap in a hard disk 
with any known good os (but one you could afford to lose)?
