Did you grab all these rpms from freshrpms:

alsa-driver-0.9.4-fr2
alsa-lib-0.9.4-fr1
alsa-utils-0.9.4-fr1
kernel-module-alsa-0.9.4-fr2_2.4.20_18.9

(I don't know that apt will handle this last one - it changed name
recently and I don't know if apt fetches kernel-* rpms)

And is kernel-module-alsa the same arch as your kernel:

% rpm -q kernel kernel-module-alsa --qf="%{ARCH}\n";
athlon
athlon

After you reboot, does "% lsmod | grep intel" show something like:

snd-intel8x0 22340 2 (autoclean)
snd-pcm 84480 0 (autoclean) [snd-pcm-oss snd-intel8x0]
snd-ac97-codec 47688 0 (autoclean) [snd-intel8x0]
snd-mpu401-uart 5120 0 (autoclean) [snd-intel8x0]
snd-page-alloc 8372 0 (autoclean) [snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm]
snd 43716 0 (autoclean) [snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss
snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm snd-timer snd-ac97-codec snd-mpu401-uart
snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device]

Does "% alsamixer" show a curses mixer?

If you get as far as seeing the mixer, try unmuting and
setting the level to around 70% for everything.

Regards,

Chris
