The screen you are describing is the one after the GRUB splash, all the text mode stuff and the briefly displayed text mode login. It shows the sequential installation of the various graphical desktop components. IIRC, you're supposed to be able to delete the various dot files for GNOME (or KDE -- not sure) if they become corrupt. If they're not there the next time you log on, they're supposed to be recreated by copies from /etc/skel (I believe).
