We suggested that he start X that way, because starting in runlevel 5 
wasn't getting him anywhere.  He'd get to the graphical login screen, and 
keyboard/mouse activity would cease.

I suggested booting to runlevel 3 and bypassing the X login, to see if 
that was the issue for him.

Obviously, it was not.
