The following patch works for me:

Unfortunately, Arjan hasn't compiled the kernel with the option to unload 
kernel modules. This causes the script /etc/rc.d/init.d/vmware only to work 
properly when the vmmon and vmnet modules are not loaded into the kernel, so 
you have to reboot your machine, unpack the downloaded file somewhere and run 
"perl runme.pl". This should apply the needed patches.

@Arjan: Can you fix the module unload option in later builds of your testing 
kernels?
