Whenever I run ls command in a directory with lots of files (/usr/lib for

Same happens when I run make menuconfig to configure kernel. It doesn't
happen with xterm or konsole or with 2.4 kernels. Anyone else see similar
behavior?

Yes, I do. I was going to say that it was consistently after about 50k, but I've just noticed the most recent one got stuck somewhere else. I do get this error reported to standard error though:

** (gnome-terminal:3087): WARNING **: Error reading from child: Bad address.

It's reporting that error that consumes all the CPU time.
