You are not using a 3c501. It's very old. You are probably seeing
messages that interpret the NIC to be a 3c501-like card. Not a 3c501
itself...why don't you post the output of 'lspci -vb' here?

Even simpler, tell us the make and model of your notebook computer and
the what cards are in the pcmcia slots.
