You are correct.  Upon further research it is a Broadcom NetExtreme
BCM5705 Gigabit Ethernet (Rev. 01).

I allowed myself three weaknesses, believing the autodetect from RH9 and
being distracted by my other challenge, the internal Intel 82801 AC'97
Modem (Rev. 03) ... also not working .. and all on a hungry tummy ...
deadly distraction!

good suggestions.
