Really? The default RPM_OPT_FLAGS are _still_ -march=i386 -mcpu=i686
which tells me it is i386-compatible instruction set but optimized
for i686 CPUs. The reason Red Hat Linux requires i586 and above is
that it doesn't ship an i386 kernel. For glibc and OpenSSL, i386
rpms are available, so once you installed the i386 errata kernel,
everything would run on i386 and i486.
