Really? The default RPM_OPT_FLAGS are _still_ -march=i386 -mcpu=i686 which tells me it is i386-compatible instruction set but optimized for i686 CPUs. The reason Red Hat Linux requires i586 and above is that it doesn't ship an i386 kernel.
