I'm more concerned about my customers, and their various GUI apps. Have you tried to see if xcdroast or gtoaster works?

As I mentioned at thread start, xcdroast works a treat w/ & w/out SCSI emulation, so I guess it knows about atapi-aware cdrecord. I've disabled ide-scsi now, and can still burn *and* can rip from my DVD ROM drive.
