It's probably the dreaded rpm hang issue, not a corrupt rpm database.
In another shell session, go to /var/lib/rpm and remove the __db* files -
Then "killall -9 rpm"
You should be ok for awhile, but the long term fix will be to update the rpm utility itself, once redhat releases a fixed version.
