I've installed the newer kernel using rpm -ivh, rather than -Uvh, so that I
can now select it, in place of the current default (kernel-2.4.20-8.athlon.rpm). I reverted to the "nv" drivers instead of "nvidia" in my XF86config, and now I log in at init3, but I still cannot install the nvidia module by running:
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4363.run.

The installer tells me that no precomplied module for my kernel
(kernel-2.4.20-9.athlon.rpm) can be found. Should I *uninstall*
the nVidia drivers first? There's nothing newer than 4363 on the nVidia site....

Go to runlevel 3 and do not start X

1. run nvidia-installer -f --update
2. if no precompiled module is found, keep going
3. accept the option to recompile - you have kernel source rpm, right?
4. a few moments later it's all good - go to runlevel 5, assuming you
didn't tamper with XF86 cfg (nvidia was working already, right?)

If you did tamper with your X config, put it back to the way you
had it when it was running the nvidia drivers, then goto runlevel 5
