Hey, have you prelinked your system?  Mine is snappy as all hell.  I
used :

prelink -aRv


Add the option M if you wnat to conserve RAM a bit.  That makes OO.org
start in 6-7 seconds for me. Wheras it took literally 20-25 seconds
before.  Plus GNOME is alot snappier.
