By "custom" cursors, could you be more specific?
... are these the one of the sets from kdelook.org?
FWIW, the advice was to copy the {pointers set} 
to /home/{user}/./icons.

I don't have a problem with these pointers (mine
are Tuxpenguin), except in Gnome when they
appear or disappear with each login.
