We've used a buslink firewire harddrive through various firwire ports.  
(Creative soundcard, built into the system board, expansion PCI slot) and it 
"Just Works"(tm) in Red Hat Linux 9.  I don't have the exact model # in front 
of me, if you wish, ping me again and I'll check when I get to work.
