Yes, it will lead you to silent error witch is very bad thing.
Adaptec cards is known to have very sensitive bus receivers/transmiters and 
require good cable/terminator. Try active terminator even if there is only 
one disk on the bus, also change your 68 wire symmetric cable to 68 wire 
twisted pair (signal/ground) one.
