Many thanks for this. I found the relevant file:

  /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme

and changed the cursor to a non-shadowed one. Not sure it looks better! My
home PC also has a cursor shadow but it is much less pronounced - didn't
really notice it until I looked real close.
