Thanks for replying. So, to clarify: noatun on your setup can play OGG 
files and video of some sort?

The issues I was dealing with had nothing to do with
not-quite-open-source. KDE on my setup cannot play OGG nor MPEG-2. There
is no sign of the Xine stuff that is supposed to be part of KDE: this is
open source too.
