X restarting after Can't locate module char-major-97

X is restarting with increasing frequency: here are the last messages:

[root@xxxxxx root]# tail /var/log/messages

May  3 10:33:11 fish last message repeated 3 times
May  3 11:10:40 fish gconfd (tom-8832): Received signal 15, shutting down
cleanly
