It's all about the memory.

I'm running cheerfully on the same processor with 512MB of memory, and
the default Gnome setup runs like a champ. Prelink definitely helped.
I'm also only (!) running 1024x768; I've noticed substantial performance
improvements kicking down the resolution a notch.

This helps a lot as well. I use Moz, but OOo is a bit much for what I need
day-to-day, and it's painful to use in general. Abiword and Gnumeric are
much snappier, and work for most things I need them for.
