I'm running cheerfully on the same processor with 512MB of memory, and the default Gnome setup runs like a champ. Prelink definitely helped. I'm also only (!) running 1024x768; I've noticed substantial performance improvements kicking down the resolution a notch. > Also, use memory-saving apps, such as Galeon or Firebird instead of > Mozilla, AbiWord instead of OO Writer, Gnumeric instead of OO Calc, etc. This helps a lot as well. I use Moz, but OOo is a bit much for what I need day-to-day, and it's painful to use in general. Abiword and Gnumeric are much snappier, and work for most things I need them for. -- Edward S.
