Network setup:

2 Windows computers (Win2k, WinXP).

The windows computers are seeing the network fine and
can see the linux machine. I can ping back and forth
with ip addresses, but only from windows to the linux
box with host name; not able to go from linux to
windows with host name.

The problem is that the computers (windows) cannot be
resolved to IPAddresses.

Example, my XP box is called "ok1". I ping ok1
this results in "ping: unknown host ok1"

What do I need to do to have linux resolve the windows
computer names to IPAddresses so I can use computer
names when on my linux box?

There are long-time internet standards for this, and linux handles it all quite nicely, but you do have to properly set things up.

You decide which mechanism or combination of mechanisms seems best to you:

1. hosts file
2. dns
3. nis
4, ldap

And then you have to configure one or more of the methods. pc-lan broadcasts are of course not an internet standard, even though they work among groups of pcs, in the same way that appletalk broadcasts are fine if you have only macs, generally speaking. There are methods to allow unix systems to use the appletalk or pc-lan host resolution methods, but would most likley be more work than just settign up dns entries.

Setting up name resolution is one of the first basic steps, and one that you should take asap.
