The first sign of madness is talking to yourself and the second is replying to your own messages :-)
However, for anyone else that might be having this problem, it was because I hadn't installed the ttfonts* RPMS. I'd forgotten that the RENDER extension uses client-side fonts which threw me for a while.

The attached file (it's only small) is "hello" in a selection of languages in UTF-8 (I hope I've set this thing up to do UTF-8) and it displays fine in a KDE konsole and konqueror and sort-of-a-bit in gnome-konsole.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
