RedHat kernels do contain patches, like NPTL backport from 2.5, that are not on the mainline 2.4.21 kernel. Compiling a vanilla 2.4.21 will surely make things like GNOME to break or start working erratically. I would recommend waiting till 2.4.21 makes it way into RawHide.
