Known bug related to NPTL. Rolling back to kernel 2.4.20-13.8 from Red Hat 8.0 fixes it, but it's an annoying workaround. See the following bugzilla entry: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=90036 I don't know if it's fixed in the latest RH 9 kernel.
