Umm^2, you replied to a message and just changed the subject line.
That is NOT enough. You should compose a completely new message.
Put the list address into your addressbook and take it from there.

A "reply" to an existing message maintains the following e-mail
headers (these are from *your* message):

  In-Reply-To: <1057806604.1171.12.camel@xxxx>
  References: <Pine.LNX.4.44.0307081904150.3190-100000@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
  <1057806604.1171.12.camel@xxxx>

They refer to the existing thread of messages about the 2.6 kernel
mailing list. That is incorrect since you wanted to create an
entirely new topic. A new message would not contain these headers
and hence would not be displayed as belonging to an existing thread.
