Can't get resolution above 8x6 -- Solved

Apparently my brain was working better after I got home from work.

I changed the monitor from "generic" to "generic svga etc etc" and now my
resolution is 1024x768. Now if I can just get back used to reading the small
fonts and stuff I'll be OK.

Incidently, I failed to mention in my original post that one of the things I
tried was reducing the color palette from "millions" to "thousands" of
colors. Heck, I can't count that high anyway.
