The system was freshly installed and I thought it was using i386 rpms, but I didn't check so it's a possible problem. Isn't it possible to install i386 rpms on an i686 system though? I thought that i386 rpms were a sort of safe "lower common denominator" and always a safe bet to install if one wasn't sure. That has major problems if you upgrade/install it with > the wrong arch.
