I've also found that the gnome-applet "wireless link monitor" keeps ticking
the hard drive every second.  Based on signal strength the applet re-reads
the same set of png files in /usr/share/pixmaps/wireless-applet/.  I'm
probaby going to wear those sectors out on my hard drive! ;-O

Ideally, these small png's need to be kept in memory rather than continously
re-read every second.
