I can confirm the problems you are having, I am having the same trouble
with ggv. If I click on a pdf file, ggv launches only after chewing up
100% of my cpu for a couple minutes, and then I get an empty ggv window.

Removing and replacing the packages ggv and xpdf as you describe below
works for me now.
