How to configure for ES1869 audio?

My notebook, a Compaq Presario 1260, has the "ES1869 Plug and Play
AudioDrive" chipset for audio. RHL 9 (and prior versions) do not
autodetect this audio device, and the ES1869 is not among the options
that can be selected from in the list of audio drivers.

I can get audio output from the ES1869 if I specify that I have a
SoundBlaster-compatible device. I have very high CPU utilization,
though, with this option during playback so I'm hoping for a more
specific solution.

What is the best audio configuration I can get given this hardware?

Thanks.
