You sent a screenshot showing a mail folder which contains many small individual threads as opposed to one long thread. With a somewhat modern mail reader which displays threaded mails in tree-view, one should be able to hide/unhide a complete thread (i.e. the initial message and *all* replies) by clicking on the first message.
