Re: CD-ROM Burning failures

In order to burn a CD, you must not access the writer through it's IDE device file, but through it's SCSI device file, probably /dev/scd0. That is also why the "hdd=ide-scsi"-line is in your grub.conf. The burning software wants a SCSI interface; ide-scsi is the translating driver that translates the SCSI language to the IDE language, which the writer realy understands.

Yesterday I tried to burn a CD for the first time in linux. I have two
cdroms, /mnt/cdrom (/dev/hdc) is the reader, and /mnt/cdrom1 (/dev/hdd)
is the cd-rw. I was using gnome and opened CD Writer (cdroast?) after
putting in the cd-rw cd. It would always pause a while, then I never
really could do anything. I may not have known what I was doing anyway
as I never really tried to burn a CD in linux before.

Now this is what I saw this morning in my log files (via email)...

Lots of below..

Apr 13 08:49:13 bart kernel: Additional sense indicates Media load or
eject failed

Then this but only once..

Apr 13 08:21:45 bart modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
char-major-97
Apr 13 08:21:45 bart last message repeated 3 times
Apr 13 08:21:46 bart modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
block-major-3
Apr 13 08:21:46 bart modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
block-major-3
Apr 13 08:21:46 bart modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
block-major-34
Apr 13 08:21:46 bart modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
block-major-34

Then this lots of times below...

Apr 13 08:21:54 bart kernel: SCSI error: host 0 id 0 lun 0 return code =
28000000
Apr 13 08:21:54 bart kernel: ^ISense class 7, sense error 0, extended
sense 3

And in my grub.conf there is the hdd=ide-scsi in my kernel line. Is
this causing the problem? This cd-rw was always automatically detected
by the installs.
