This is accomplished with a filesystem called umsdos.  It was a regular part
of old Slackware distros, back in the day.

I haven't ouched it in a long time, but it basicly accomplishes on FAT, what
OS X does on HFS+.  Unsure of VFAT/FAT-32 compatibility - But there _is_ a
HOWTO, for those interested.
