I've found  that the Asus cards using the Ti4200
and Ti4600 (the latter being closer to the
9700) work well under Linux and give good 3D
rendering and are probably well within your
price range. I've never had a crash with them.

Asus is probably making a card based on the new
GeForce FX series as well, but I've no experience
with them.
