athlon or i686 for duron?

I know this has been covered in the past, but I'm not having much luck
searching Google or the archives at the moment.

We have a Duron processor on our machine, which was initially set up with
an i686 kernel. Would it be best to stick with that? Or should I use an
athlon one?
