sounds like the UTF problem that was introdused in 8.0.  you'll have to 
edit your /etc/sysconfig/i18n file and remove the UTF, as well change:
SYSFONT="lat0-sun16"
SYSFONTSCM="iso15"

if I remember correctly, didn't have time to check..
