CD burning (AUDIO) and "chipmunks", oh my!!!

...someone correct me if I'm wrong:
I've enabled mp3 / mpeg support in Red Hat 9 (Shrike) by installing
these "minimally necessary" (IMHO) packages from
http://www.freshrpms.net

viz:

aalib-1.4rc5-fr2.i386.rpm
alsa-lib-0.9.2-fr2.i386.rpm
flac-1.1.0-fr3.i386.rpm
libfame-0.9.0-fr2.i386.rpm
mpg321-0.2.10-fr2.i386.rpm
xine-0.9.20-fr2.i386.rpm
xine-lib-1.0.0-fr0.beta9.2.i386.rpm
xvidcore-0.9.0-fr4.i386.rpm

BEFORE burning any CD's, I make sure to *disable* magicdev.
Thus, I have been able to burn /erase data CD's with X-CD-Roast.
With Gnome Toaster, I have been able to burn / erase data AND
music CD's (original sound files are .mp3).

EXCEPT: some audio tracks *.mp3 which _invariably_ give me CD's
that sound like they have been recorded at double speed.
... *regardless* of the actual speed that I've used to burn
the CD. These files are old BBC radio programs. They play fine
when I place my mouse pointer over them in Nautilus, they just *don't*
play properly when burnt to CD!!! Other mp3 files work, no problem.

... any ideas? If I can get them to playback in RH 9 / Nautlius, why won't
they playback properly once burnt to CD. ... and no it's NOT a permissions
problem: the files are *all* universally writeable.
