You are right Eric but some on this list said the .iso was
what I need.

Yes, the ISO is what you need. You must burn the ISO directly to CD. Usually, you need to tell your sofware to write a "disc image" to the CD, rather than burning files.

I burned them on a Sony using BHA Gold
software and the 'data' option.

I'm not familiar with that program. What other options has it got?

 The CD burner won't convert
it to real files. Is there a way to do it (convert to
useable files) on the hard disk?

When you burn the image to CD, the files are available.

 I can't understand why Red
Hat can't use an ordinary ZIP type files for this stuff.

Zip isn't ordinary. ISO is for this application.

They'll do anything to complicate it.

ISO is also by far the easiest way to do this. Otherwise, Red Hat would have to document the correct filesystem structure, how to make the CD bootable, how to make sure filenames aren't truncated, etc...

Distributing anything but an ISO would be a nightmare. Once you figure out how it works, you'll see that this is the easiest way by far. In most software, it's about two clicks worth of work.
