If your leds on the keyboard flashes it usually means you got a kernel
oops. (i.e. your kernel crashed) Congratulations I haven't had that
happening to me in a couple of months :)

If you check /var/log/messages and look for that time frame you'll see a
lot of strange things being written to that file ;)
