Samba vs. direct CUPS for Windows clients?

For many years the Linux server on my small network has been providing
networked printer access to our Windows clients via Samba. With fewer
and fewer Win9x systems on the network, I'm thinking of going with the
Win2K/WinXP Unix Printing Services as an alternative.

My server is currently running RedHat v7.3 and the LPR printer services,
but I expect to update to RH 9 and CUPS in the next few months. (Yes, I
know that I could be using CUPS on RHL 7.3, but LPR is working fine for
me and CUPS seemed Too New at the time I setup 7.3)

Can someone explain, or point me to an explanation, of the relative merits
of using Samba as a CUPS front-end versus doing direct Windows to CUPS
spooling of print jobs?

Thanks.
